Does Your Family Know About Your Most Prized Possession?

Wildfires and earthquakes have touched the lives of many Californians this year.  This kind of emergency raises the terrible question of what you would take with you in an evacuation.  Beyond your children and pets, the next thing that springs to mind is likely among your most prized possessions.

What is your most prized possession?

For some people, it’s a family heirloom, inherited through many generations.  For others, it’s a sign of great accomplishment.  If nothing comes to mind, you might use the metric of the immensely popular tidying expert, best-selling author and Netflix star, Marie Kondo.  She suggests to identify the objects that matter most to you by holding each one and feeling whether it sparks joy.

Whatever it is, this piece of personal property has a story – a story worth telling.  It’s likely connected to a very meaningful moment in your life, that should be preserved for your family.

Does your family know about your most prized possession?

When my mother-in-law passed away, my husband and I had a house full of her personal possessions, a lifetime of things to sort through.  Although she and my husband were very close, we discovered many items that had no known personal significance to her.  Why did she save these things?  And what would she want us to keep or share with our children?

At LifeLadder Estate Planning, we believe estate planning can do more than just transfer financial assets.  We know from personal experience that your image, your voice and your words of wisdom may be the best gift you can give to your loved ones.  Every LifeLadder client has the opportunity to do a Video Time Capsule, where we ask a series of thought-provoking questions and record the invaluable answers for future generations.

I love to include the most prized possession in our first Video Time Capsule, because it speaks volumes about each client’s priorities and perspective on life.  These stories are so important to preserve that we have decided to offer the Video Time Capsule as a complimentary addition to every LifeLadder Estate Plan package.

If you want to get started preserving your intangible wealth right now, download the mini-interview questions below, grab your smartphone, and start recording.
